Natürlich tut es der gute alte Rucksack beim Cachen auch. Aber ständig steht man da und muss das blöde Ding vom Rücken holen und dann läuft man durch den Wald, Maglite in der einen Hand, Notizen in der anderen, Handy in die Hosentasche gestopft, hier einen Stift, da einen Stift, diverse benötigte Dinge sind in der Jackentasche zu finden. Und was ist im Rucksack? So gut wie nichts. Warum schleppt man also das Riesending mit sich herum? Für das Getränk, oder ein Seil? <br />

Nach einigen Cachetouren sieht man langsam ein, dass der Rucksack nicht das Wahre ist. Auch auf dem Mountainbike stört er mehr, als er hilfreich ist. Ok, in meinem Fall werde ich, "dank" fehlenden Gepäckträgers, nicht drumherum kommen, aber Teile der Ausrüstung müssen einfach griffbereiter sein. Meine nächste Anschaffung wird eine kleine Tasche für den Gürtel sein, eine Tasche, wo man Handy, Zettel und Stifte unterbringen kann. <br />

Wenn es doch nur so einfach wäre, wie es in Tomb Raider aussieht. Gestern war das Wetter allerdings so bescheiden - klar, ist ja auch Karneval <img src="http://geocaching.tombraidergirl.net/templates/default/img/emoticons/wink.png" alt=";-)" style="display: inline; vertical-align: bottom;" class="emoticon" /> -, dass ich mich noch mal auf die Suche nach detaillierteren Karten gemacht habe. Dabei bin ich auf <a href="http://openstreetmap.org/">openstreetmap.org</a> gestoßen, ein Projekt, bei dem jeder mitmachen kann. Leute aus aller Welt laden hier ihre GPS-Tracks hoch, bzw arbeiten sie in die existierende Karte ein. Der Detailreichtum lässt zwar noch etwas zu wünschen übrig - und die Genauigkeit ist nun mal prinzipbedingt höchstens so hoch wie die des verwendeten GPS-Empfängers -, aber je mehr Leute mitmachen, desto besser wird die Karte werden. Das Ganze steht dann nachher unter <a href="http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Licence">Creative Commons Lizenz</a> (cc-by-sa), sodass man die Karten auch guten Gewissens herunterladen und verwenden kann.<br />

Und da ist das Problem: Die planet.osm-Datei, die sämtliche gesammelten Daten enthält, ist bereits gepackt 3,9 GB groß. Als ich sie auspacken wollte, war bei 44 GB meine Platte voll, und ich weiß nicht, wieviel da noch gekommen wäre. Außerdem will ich ja nicht den ganzen Planeten haben - das ist vielleicht interessant für Leute, die ein Garmin mit SD-Card-Slot haben und eine Karte von, was weiß ich, 8 GB Größe, aber ich hab nur 24 MB in meinem Gerät. Also will ich stattdessen nur die näherer Umgebung.<br />
<br />
Nun gut, denke ich mir, da gibt es ein Tool, das mir die Karte passend beschneidet: In dem Paket <a href="http://vgps.webs.com/html/faq.htm">VGSM</a> (Download unter dem Punkt "Does VGPS support Open Street Map format (OSM)?") gibt es ein Java-Programm osmclip, das das machen können sollte. Also eine named pipe angelegt (mkfifo source.osm) und dort die Ausgabe vom bunzip2 hineingepipet (bunzip2 -c planet.osm.bz2 > source.osm), weil, Platz zum Auspacken ist ja nicht... Sodann die entsprechende Konfigurationsdatei angepaßt (bounds.txt) und das Programm auf die Pipe angesetzt (java -Xmx768m osmclip source.osm). Und das läuft jetzt schon seit zwei Stunden und ist immer noch nicht fertig. (Außerdem vermute ich mal, dass die bounds nicht richtig gesetzt sind, die Ausgabe enthält Dinge, die in NRW so wohl nicht vorkommen.)<br />

Was also tun? Glücklicherweise gibt es ja immernoch nette Menschen, so auch in dem zum Projekt gehörenden Wiki. Mit dem <a href="http://geocaching.tombraidergirl.net/archives/17-GPS.html">bereits erwähnten</a> <a href="http://www.mapwel.biz/down.htm">mapupload</a> habe ich die Map Tiles, die ich brauchte, auf das GPS hoch geladen, und auch hier sehen die ganz vernünftig aus. (Nicht so schön wie die ebenfalls bereits erwähnte Wupper-Sieg-Karte, aber dafür ist der Ausschnitt auch um einiges größer.) Zur besseren Orientierung habe ich mir dann auch mal aufgeschrieben, was in welcher Tile ist, zumindest so weit mich das interessiert:<br />

Beim Stöbern in diversen Shops (eigentlich auf der Suche nach Geocoins und Travel Bugs) sind mir noch weitere komische Dinge aufgefallen, die man haben kann/muss/soll.<br />

Angeblich gibt es Caches für die man eine <em>UV-Lampe</em> benötigt. Dann gibt es spezielle <em>Cacherhandschuhe</em>. Für den Cacheausleger gibt es auch einfach alles Nano-Dosen z.B. für Stationen eines Multis, Magneten in allen Formen, Reflektorfolie für den Nachtcache, für Digitalfotographen gibt es auch leere Filmdosen aus denen man dann Micros machen kann, Einfrierdosen gibt es in allen Formen und Farben und sogar Zipperbeutel, die das Logbuch vor Feuchtigkeit schützen sollen.

GPS mit dem Navi, das war ja auf die Dauer nicht. Und deswegen sind wir gestern in Bonn beim <i>Steppenwolf</i> gewesen und haben uns diese "richtigen" Dinger mal anschauen wollen. Glücklicherweise habe ich ja immer eine Taschenlampe im Auto liegen, und die nimmt auch noch zwei AAs. Also Batterien in das GPS eingesetzt und losgecachet. Was wir gefunden haben, das hat Jana ja schon berichtet, und ich bin heute faul und schreib nur einen Artikel.<br />

Ach, was war das entspannend. Macht direkt viel mehr Spaß, wenn man sich sicher sein kann, wenigstens ungefähr an der richtigen Stelle zu stehen. Nämlich mitten im Wald, umgeben von 20 oder 30 Meter hohen Bäumen. Und trotzdem: Genauigkeit ±5m. An einer Stelle, an der das Navi wieder hundert Meter hin und her gesprungen wäre. (Selbst hier drin, unter 40cm Beton und einer Fußbodenheizung empfängt das Teil 6 Sateliten und bestimmt die Position auf angeblich ±8m genau. Nagut, ich sitz auch nah am Fenster. Aber trotzdem.)<br />

Soviel zum spaßigen Teil, jetzt zum Frust: Nachdem wir gestern von der erfolgreichen Jagd nach Hause gekommen sind, habe ich mich dann erst mal dran gemacht, das Teil <i>wirklich</i> zu verstehen. Man irrt kreuz und quer durch den Wald, bis man irgendwann die Hand vor Augen nicht mehr sieht. (Aber irgendwann heben wir den auch noch!) <img src="http://geocaching.tombraidergirl.net/templates/default/img/emoticons/wink.png" alt=";-)" style="display: inline; vertical-align: bottom;" class="emoticon" /></div></div>Und offenbar haben die Leute von Garmin endlich auch eine Deutsche Übersetzung hin bekommen (nicht, daß wir die bräuchten, aber im Netz beschweren sich die Leute noch überall, daß sie nur Englisch zur Auswahl hätten).<br />

Dann habe ich mich auf die Jagd nach freien Kartendaten gemacht. Die MapSource-Karten sind mir mit 199,- € (für ganz Deutschland) etwas zu teuer. Das einzige, was ich gefunden habe, ist eine Karte, die von der Wupper bis zur Sieg und vom Rhein bis irgendwo hinters Bergische geht. (<a href="http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/maplist.php?author=2814">link</a>) Hennef ist nicht mehr drauf, Seelscheid schon. Naja, immerhin etwas, und dem geschenkten Gaul schaut man bekannlich ja nicht ins Maul. Was die Genauigkeit angeht, so werde ich mich dessen annehmen, wenn wir mal wieder unterwegs sind.<br />
<br />
Was mich zum eigentlichen Frust-Teil dieses Eintrags bringt: Wie krieg ich die Datei ins Gerät?! Hätte ich doch die Version mit SD-Card genommen, das wäre (angeblich) einfacher gewesen. Aber auch 80,- € teurer. Und man ist ja knickerig. Und außerdem muß das mit dem USB-Kabel doch auch gehen, 24MB Kartenspeicher habe ich schließlich auch so.<br />
<br />
Ein Programm, mit dem man Karten hochladen können soll, ist <a href="http://cgpsmapper.com/">sendmap</a>, das zum cGPSmapper gehört, einem Tool, mit dam man Karten auch gleich in das passende Gramin-Binärformat umwandeln kann. So weit die Theorie. Das mit dem Umwandeln hat nach einigen Anläufen ja auch funktioniert (obwohl ich das nur noch zum Sport gemacht habe, denn eine umgewandelte Karte ist bereits unter dem ersten Link oben verfügbar). sendmap wollte jedoch nicht. Weder hier noch auf dem Desktop, weder unter Windoof noch unter Linux. Es sagt noch <em>trying USB</em>, aber dann kommt nix mehr.<br />
<br />
Um eine lange Geschichte etwas abzukürzen: Nach langer, langer Suche habe ich dann endlich ein Programm gefunden, das funktioniert: <a href="http://www.mapwel.biz/down.htm">mapupload</a>. Damit habe ich mir dann erst mal die Basemap zerbröselt, weil das wohl hingeht und den Kartenspeicher erst mal so richtig schön "aufräumt". Aber die Basemap ist ja bei der Standardinstallation der beim Gerät beiligenden Software mit dabei, also kein Problem, das zu korrigieren.<br />
<br />
Trotz dieser ganzen Schwierigkeiten bin ich der Meinung, daß sie die Anschaffung gelohnt hat. Endlich findet man mal die Stelle, an die man wirklich wollte.

Als Einsteiger fragt man sich "Was braucht man zum Geocaching so?". Diese Frage scheint auch nicht so einfach beantwortet. <br />
<br />
Also als erstes Mal braucht man einen GPS Empfänger, mit dessen Hilfe man die Caches überhaupt erstmal finden kann. Dazu empfiehlt sich, wenn nicht beim GPS dabei, ein Kompass. Dann braucht man einen guten Spürsinn um z.B. Micros, wie Filmdosen in dem Gebiet dann zu finden. <br />
<br />
Als sinnvoll empfinde ich außerdem ein Handy und eine Uhr. Wenn man mit Gruppen unterwegs ist und beim Suchen in verschiedenen Ecken Kontakt halten möchte, wünscht man sich vielleicht hier und da mal ein Walky-Talky (wenn man Handykosten sparen möchte).<br />
<br />
Sinnvoll sind auch kleine Tauschgegenstände für größere Caches; das kann alles mögliche sein: eine Kerze, ein Spielzeug, ein Sammelobjekt, ein Schlüsselband...<br />
<br />
Sicherlich ist es auch sinnvoll die Beschreibung dabei zu haben. Entweder auf einem PDA-ähnlichen Gerät (ein Laptop wäre beim Suchen eher unhandlich) oder auf die altmodische Art: auf Papier ausgedruckt.<br />
<br />
Einen Stift sollte man auch immer dabei haben, vor allem da gerade in Filmdosen nur sehr selten ein Stift (ja, wir haben schon einen sehr sehr kleinen Bleistift angetroffen!) vorhanden ist. Auch unterwegs möchte man sich ggf. Notizen machen, und wenn es die Übersetzung des Hinweises ist.<br />
<br />
Heute habe ich mir sogar ein Fernglas gewünscht. <br />
<br />
Weitere Gegenstände, die sich als sinnvoll erweisen könnten: Taschenmesser, Taschenrechner (falls man die GPS Koordinaten umrechnen muss, wenn das Gerät nur andere Werte versteht, als angegeben sind), Taschenlampe (falls es unerwartet schon vor dem Fund dunkel wird, oder es in eine Höhle geht) Fotoapparat (für Erinnerungen), ggf. ein Snack und Getränke.<br />
